  • Without Rick

This week so far, has been without Rick. One of our instructors, as he’s at a conference I believe for laser stuff. (Like the laser cutter.)

So Tony one of the other instructors has taken over. So far it’s been working on stuff but also setting up the complicated printer. Which took forever to download. But tomorrow we’re doing a trapping excerise. No idea what that is, but it sounds rather interesting. I’ll update this blog about that activity on Thursday.

But also, me, Jess, and Abri, went with Tony to the Hub building here on campus to observe the wall that we’re designing a vinyl thing for. It looks vastly different from the image and I kinda wish everyone came to see.

  • Campaign

It has been a full week of class finally, and I feel a bit overwhelmed with all the assignments being assigned left and right. But I’m working through them. Although this does make me forget my one non-graphic design class sometimes. Which is my social problems class, which is another can of worms. Kinda wish I took that class a few semesters ago, but it’s alright. It’s a “it’s there” class for me, since it’s online.

But working on the campaign for the portfolio show has been fun honestly. I get to design something that isn’t full of restraints. The only thing is the main colors but it’s fun. It helps to get my creative juices flowing. Plus gives a taste of the graphic design field.

  • Hello world!

Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start writing!

  • Overstimulated

So, we are onto our first full week, and it’s so much work. Projects introduced one after another, it’s a lot of work but that’s just a taste of the graphic design field isn’t it? Personally I’m excited for the personal branding project.

Cause I heard from Rachel Johnson (formerly Rachel Anders) that the personal branding project is fun. I think it would be fun too, cause all the projects we have been designing so far have the restraints of others. Now I can get to decide what I want, I’m designing for myself.

  • Almost a full week but I’m counting it.

Finally we have gotten a full week of class well, almost. We had Monday off but I’m counting it.

But we finally got to learn and do stuff because last week was just syllabus and get into class stuff. This week we actually got to be creative, and we’re revising our magazines! Looking back it with fresh eyes after winter break really shows the minor details I forgot about. Such as random commas missing, and some pieces of the text as well.

But this week really opened my eyes to the concept of orphans. Tony thought this and it just became ingrained in my mind this week.

It sounds weird, but orphans in this context means a word left on a line by itself. It just feels off next to everything else which has full sentences. So I went around fixing that and random hyphens throughout.

I also want to fix up the ads, as they’re my first work for the semester and three of them need some minor work to look even better.

  • Technically 2nd day of class???

So back to class finally, we only had one day of class last week due to complications and today was our 2nd physical day. Moving on, in one of my classes today we discussed another part of the portfolio. Our self promotional video.

We watched a lot of them from the internet today and gave me a million ideas about mine. I want mine to be creative and eye catching. I don’t want mine to be some generic piece. I want mine to be special so I ran a million ideas through my head and hopefully I can make it. Apparently last year, the students did theirs last minute and it felt rushed when watching? I’ll take that into consideration for mine.

  • Not a full week!

I don’t have much to blog about for classes as I barely had class this week! Due to the instructors having their personal things that they need to take care of. Which is understandable.

So far I only had a sociology class and two classes that were basically introductions to the class.

So I’ll talk about the sociology class. The class is called Social Problems, and I started it on Monday. It’s an online class which has its issues. I personally don’t like how it’s just a class where you just teach yourself. It’s just reading a chapter of the book, read a powerpoint, do a quiz, and forum discussion. But what I enjoyed about the class so far is the concept it teaches.

Sociology teaches you to view things from all perspective. I think that would be useful in Graphic Design! You can’t just view your designs from the perspective of the graphic designer! You have to imagine it from the perspective of the consumer as well! Genius!

  • Technically(?) First Day of my Last Semester

My first day back on campus cause yesterday I had no class because my instructor was out. First day back and usually the first days are just reading the syllabus and such. So nothing out of the ordinary.

But I finally got my Etsy shop up and running, that’ll be an experience. A good experience to see what running a business is like, and it also means I’ll be working with marketing and figuring out what works and what doesn’t!

I’m excited for my final semester, I heard it’s very stressful but I am happy because I get to design my own brand. I have a gut feeling I’m gonna be stressed later on, but right now it’s good.

  • ❄️ End of Winter Break

I’m always talking about time in these blog posts. But that’s what makes them so human, they document the flow of time. Saving them for the future to see. That’s why I also journal every single night about my day. One day, I’ll be old. My memory won’t be the same as it was. But my written word will hold up.

Moving on from that, I decided to do a little fun. I decided to create a fake news for a game that my brother likes. To see if he falls for it. Which combines work in things like photoshop and adobe after effects to create the fake game footage.

  • ❄️ Evolving over the years

Recently, over the winter break I found old pieces of my artwork from over the years. They’re in my sketchbooks which I have a shelf of. It really shows how much better I have gotten over the years. Those hands I drew in middle school look bad. Which shows I grown with my skills.

Which led me to a little activity I did.

I decided to redraw my old artwork in my current style and it’s fun. I use to do mostly traditional art with alcohol markers. (Markers that blend very well.) But I switched over to digital as those markers costed $8 a pop. Digital Art is much cheaper in the long terms, and I learned many skills over the years that helped me become the artist I am now.
